Approved for public use by Pope Leo XIII in 1899, the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a masterful synthesis of 17th-century devotions. Its structure serves as a historical timeline of Catholic piety:
- The Foundation (1691): Father Croiset composed a litany that provided the first 17 invocations.
- The Expansion (1718): Venerable Anne Madeleine Remuzat of Marseille added 10 more, bringing the total to 27.
- The Final Form (1899): To reach its current form, the Sacred Congregation for Rites incorporated 6 additional invocations originally written by Sister Madeleine Joly in 1686.
The final prayer consists of 33 invocations, each representing a year of Jesus Christ’s life on earth. Faithful who recite this litany are granted a partial indulgence.
